As of 9:00am EDT today, free agency, MASL-style, has begun. No one knows if the “Live Period” will be a frenzy or a bust because this is the first time in recent memory that a league had a two-week shopping window and definitely the first time it was done in public.

The Harrisburg Heat rang the bell to open trading.

St. Louis Ambush General Manager Brian Roth expressed optimism.

Ian Bennett apparently reached an impasse with the Milwaukee Wave, ominously commenting:

Things just got real…. May 1st here we come I guess!!! #stillblessed #ib26

Some insiders predicted a rash of players re-signing with their current teams before May 1.  Of our top free agents (T&B Ranks the Top 40 MASL Free Agents) only William Vanzela re-signed with his current team, inking up with the Blast on April 25. Among the unranked free agents only Stuart Grable re-signed with the Wave.

The lack of activity makes some wonder if teams will be aggressive at all during the free agent live period or whether they will wait until September for the bulk of their roster shaping.  Depending on when their contracts end, several players will be free agents again at various times after the live period ends on May 15, so even if teams don’t score a big prize now, there will be other opportunities to sign available talent.
