The barnstorming US National Arena Soccer Team (USNAST) is back in action this week with games on Thursday at Family Arena in St. Charles, MO and Saturday at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, IA against the Mexican National Futbol Rapido Team.

The US is preparing to defend their WMF World Cup title in Tunisia this October, but has had a bumpy summer, going 2-4 on their tour. Coach Phil Salvagio’s team is 1-2 against Mexico in that stretch, but won the last meeting, 7-6, on May 13.

This weekend, the US will arguably have more firepower at their disposal than they did in recent games in Boise, ID and West Valley City, UT. Three time league MVP Kraig Chiles returns to the squad as well as 40-goal scorer Taylor Bond and Joey Tavernese, who has averaged more than a goal per game in his last three MASL seasons.

New teammates Bond, who signed this offseason with the Cedar Rapids Rampage, and regular USNAST fixture Gordy Gurson, clicked in their last game together, the MASL International Challenge, which was also played at Family Arena in June.

Also joining the roster this week is All-MASL First Team defender John Sosa, who will join 2016/17 MASL Defender of the Year Stephen Basso and Joshio Sandoval in the back.

The St. Louis Ambush, who call Family Arena home, will be represented on the USNAST roster by Corey Adamson and Richard Schmermund.

Mexico will be led by 51-goal scorer Christian Gutierrez and Luis Alonso “Negro” Sandoval, who is a former Mexican international player outdoors, and has played for several Liga MX teams including Chivas Guadalajara.

Veterans of Coach Rene Ortiz’s team include Victor Quiroz, Angel Curiel and Bogar Moreno.   Jesus Flores and former Atlas  goalkeeper Alan Lopez will share time in goal for Mexico.

Tickets are still available online.
