The US National Arena Soccer Team (USNAST) announced the final four games of its barnstorming tour this week. The US will face off against Mexico, their top rival and fellow finalist from the 2015 World Minifootball Federation World Cup.
The action starts September 14 at Kay Yeager Coliseum in Wichita Falls, Texas. On September 17 the El Paso Coyotes will co-host a game at the El Paso County Coliseum. On September 22, arena soccer comes to the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. The teams will then conclude the tour with a game at the Denver Coliseum on September 23.
In all the USNAST will have played 12 games in eight states, bringing professional arena soccer for the first time to Bakersfield, CA, Boise, ID, Wichita Falls, TX and Rio Rancho, NM.
The USNAST has been preparing to defend its title in next month’s WMF World Cup in Nabeul, Tunisia.
Thus far on their tour, the US is 3-5, including a 2-3 record against Mexico. “Although the results have been frustrating and we want to win every time we step on the field, the bigger picture is getting 15 men together that will play for a common goal this October and represent the USA well,” said USNAST General Manager Bernie Lilavois. “We haven’t decided the final roster of 15 players by any means.”
Lilavois has been evaluating players on and off the field and the results have been secondary, with the lineup changing regularly from city to city. “I’ve been constantly evaluating the players on every trip on not only what they can do on the field, individually, but more importantly for me what they bring to the team as leaders, their professionalism, pride and passion for what it means to represent the red white and blue,” he said.
The final World Cup roster will be decided shortly after the Rio Rancho and Denver games. The team will depart for Tunisia on October 4.
