Another week in the MASL is upon us, and it’s time for Merlin’s Picks! Last week I went 8-2 with my only losses coming at the hands of El Paso and sigh.. Syracuse. So, who am I picking this week? Let’s see!

I’m already 0-1 this week as I predicted Soles to edge out RGV. But, the Barracudas came out with an offensive flurry, especially in the middle of the 1st quarter, and took an 11-7 victory over the visting Soles. Congratulations to the RGV Barracudas on their first win of the season!

Tonight, is quite possibly the game of the week, as El Paso and Monterrey square off. El Paso is the surprise team in the MASL with a record of 5-2, while Monterrey comes in at a perfect 6-0. I give the win to Monterrey in this matchup.

On Friday, Florida hosts Baltimore. The last time these teams met was last Sunday in Baltimore where the Blast dominated the Tropics 10-1. At the same time, the last time these teams met in Florida, the Tropics defeated the Blast for the very first time 5-4. So, how do I see this game going? Baltimore gets the win, but it will be close. The Blast will need to re-acclimate themselves with a larger field if they are to go far in the playoffs.

In the other Eastern Conference showdown Friday night, Syracuse travels to Harrisburg to take on the Heat. The Silver Knights have had Harrisburg’s number ever since they joined the league, going 12-2 lifetime, and 4-1 last year against the Heat. This trend will continue as Syracuse will beat Harrisburg. After last Saturday’s loss to the Tropics, Coach Ryan Hall will have the guys ready for this key divisional matchup.

For the last game of the night, Turlock faces Rio Grande in Turlock. Give me Rio Grande to pull off the victory against the home Express.

On Saturday, Baltimore travels south to face the Heat. Both teams will have played the night before, so fatigue will come into play here. Baltimore is 5-0 at home, but 0-1 on the road heading into this weekend. Speaking of the Blast, I’d like to congratulate William Vanzela on his performance against the Tropics last week. Giving up one goal in that environment is quite a feat.

Next, we have two games coming from the Central Division as Kansas City hosts Cedar Rapids and Milwaukee takes on St. Louis. I like both home teams in this one. Cedar Rapids defeated Kansas City last week at home 10-4 in quite possibly their best game of the season, and I see them playing a similar game this week! And Milwaukee is… well Milwaukee.

The final game of Saturday night, has Soles de Sonora traveling to Kent, Washington to face Danny Waltman and the Tacoma Stars. Tacoma comes off two road losses to Kansas City and Milwaukee, and are in need of some home cooking. They’ll get that Saturday, and they’ll get the W over Soles. And I’ll throw in a Sunday win for them as well, as the two teams will play each other the next night!

On Sunday, Cedar Rapids will travel to St. Louis to face the Ambush. In a tightly contested battle, Cedar Rapids will defeat the Ambush. Don’t worry Ambush fans, your team will not lose every game this season. The streak will be broken, but you’ll have to find out when in the coming weeks!

Ontario will be at home Sunday against the Rio Grande Valley Barracudas. The Fury will be well rested, and RGV will be playing their third game in five nights. Give me fresh legs over tired legs in this one as Ontario defeats the Barracudas.

In the second game of a home and home, Monterrey travels to El Paso to face the Coyotes. The Flash will sweep the home and home after defeating El Paso.

In the final game of Week 8, San Diego will host the Turlock Express. If Turlock can play a complete game, they’ll have a chance of defeating San Diego. But, unfortunately for Express fans, San Diego WILL win this game. They have too much firepower and a great goalkeeper in Chris Toth, and that is why this game will go in the favor of the Sockers.

So to recap:

Monterrey > El Paso (Will Win Both Games)

Baltimore > Florida

Syracuse > Harrisburg

RGV > Turlock

Baltimore > Harrisburg

Cedar Rapids > Kansas City

Milwaukee > St. Louis

Tacoma > Soles (Will Win Both Games)

Cedar Rapids > St. Louis

Ontario > RGV

San Diego > Turlock

Every team is in action this week, so what say you MASL Nation? Will your team win this week?
