This was the week of Syracuse and Sonora. Almost every week is Monterrey, Milwaukee, and San Diego week, and they won big again, but they have been in the top four all year. The Silver Knights (+4 to #5) and Soles (+3 to #9) were this week’s big movers.
Both teams benefited from other teams losing. Syracuse beat Florida, while Cedar Rapids, Ontario, and El Paso also lost. Sonora got a bump from El Paso and Harrisburg’s losses. Both teams face huge challenges to their newly elevated perches. Syracuse hosts 9-2 Baltimore Friday, while Sonora hosts 12-0 Milwaukee Saturday. One thing they both at least have in their favor is the home field advantage.
It has always been apparent, but now is becoming almost official, that the division races are decided and everyone else is playing for second place. Baltimore’s magic number is 10, San Diego’s is nine, Monterrey’s is five, and Milwaukee’s is down to three. The fight for second place is tight in every division, even in the Central Division where Kansas City gained 1.5 games this weekend to pull within 2 of Cedar Rapids.
Last week the Ambush gave us “the stupidest goal in the history of ever”, a 140-foot blocked pass, but this week the Ambush decided to cut out the middle man and end a tie game by scoring on themselves on a free kick in their own end, with no defensive pressure. Here’s this week’s WTF Moment:
There’s a Wave coming.
Everyone wants to see a Wave/Flash battle of unbeatens Sunday, but Milwaukee has to get past King Tayou and the Soles Saturday first.
The Sockers did things to the Express that we can’t talk about in this medium.
The Blast got a controversial win (no goal?!) over Harrisburg and lost Lucas Roque for the year. It’s a devastating injury for Roque, but it will have little impact on the system-based Blast’s three-peat aspirations.
A nice road win over Florida combined with Cedar Rapids, El Paso, and Ontario losses put the Knights at new heights, but Baltimore is coming Friday so no time to celebrate.
Florida has fallen into a a bout of stagnation.
The Rampage still can’t hang with Milwaukee and have suddenly lost three in a row to fall below .500.
Ontario got blown out in Tacoma thanks in part to a three-point debut by former Fury Nick Perera.
The Soles are looking like their old selves, but Milwaukee will be a huge test Saturday.
Four straight losses and a slumping Christian Gutierrez.
Instant Goal Mix: Just add Nick Perera. Serves up to 11 goals.
Polar vortexes and cyclone bombs, but no Heat.
The Comets did something no team has done for a long time: they rallied from a 6-0 deficit to win.
The Barracudas have a league worst -44 goal differential.
The Ambush did something no team has done in a long time: they blew a 6-0 lead and lost.
The Sockers outscored them 18-3 in two games last weekend. Ouchie.
