5/4/18 All-out Cabral – Following a 10-10 season, which netted Denison Cabral an MASL Coach of the Year Award, the Harrisburg Heat crash landed in Cabral’s second season, going 6-16. On Friday the team announced that Cabral would not be returning for a third season and has instead accepted a coaching  position with Washington Spirit Academy. The Heat plan to undertake a methodical search to find Cabral’s replacement. Harrisburg is at a crossroads after a lost season, in which their thin roster was exposed by a series of injuries, but the team recently re-signed goalkeeper Hugo Silva and leading scorer Thiago Freitas, keeping a talented nucleus intact.

5/4/18 Waltman re-signs with Stars – The face of the Tacoma Stars franchise will be back for two more seasons after the team announced Danny Waltman has signed a new contract Friday. In his three years with the Stars, the Gig Harbor, WA native has started all 62 regular season games and five playoff games, compiling a 34-28 regular season record and a 1-4 playoff mark. Waltman would have been a Top 10 free agent on our T&B Ranks the 2018 Top 40 MASL Free Agents, but he re-signed before our final list was published.

5/5-5/6/18 US and Canada Split Home-and-Home – The US National Arena Soccer Team and Canadian National Arena Soccer Team split a weekend home-and-home series of international exhibition games. On Saturday, the US took a 5-2 win at the LC Walker Arena in Muskegon, Michigan. Aldony Mendez, making his first US appearance and representing his hometown Muskegon Risers, had a goal and an assist. On Sunday, Canada had Dwayne De Rosario back in their lineup at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, and came away with a 5-4 overtime win. Goalkeeper Josh Lemos scored a goal for Canada.

5/7/18 Free Agency Gets off on the Manfut – Publicly, it looks like the MASL Live Period has had a slow first week, but things are in motion behind the scenes. MASL contracts have to be approved before they can be announced, and then teams coordinate their announcements with the league. Sometimes that could be the same day or sometimes it could be weeks later. The St. Louis Ambush today announced the signing of Antonio Manfut, #34 on our list, joining Danny Waltman as the only two player signings announced so far during the Live Period. However, Turf and Boards has learned that nearly a dozen of our ranked players have re-signed with their current teams and a handful of big names have signed with new teams, so keep watching.
