A day after the capital city of Guatemala was rocked by the violent eruption of the Fuego volcano, Pan American Minifootball Cup organizers and participants agreed to forge ahead with the tournament, which is scheduled to begin Thursday.

In a statement by the Pan American Minifootball Federation, the tournament will be renamed the First Pan-American Memorial Minifootball Cup Guatemala 2018 in honor of the victims. The confirmed death toll has risen to 69.

Even as Guatemala City’s airport re-opened yesterday, some of the teams were not sure they could get there because of backlogged and rescheduled flights. Despite some apprehension, everyone agreed to do the best they could. It was agreed that based on the timing, it was too late to postpone the tournament, even as teams were scrambling to adjust and confirm their itineraries.
