With a full slate of games on the Week 17 schedule, the 2019-20 MASL season came to a sudden end after William Banahene’s goal sealed a 5-3 win for the Harrisburg Heat over Utica City on Wednesday due to the COVID-19-related shutdown of the league (and just about the entire sports and entertainment industry).

The Monterrey Flash and Florida Tropics ended the season at the top of the Power Rankings. The Flash finished last season at #5, while the Tropics were #14.

Monterrey started this year at #2, but by Week 3 the Flash ascended to the top spot and never relinquished it, losing only to the Tacoma Stars and Sonora Soles along the way.

Florida grabbed the #2 spot after Week 10 and there they remained, only losing twice to the Milwaukee Wave and once to Tacoma all season.

The Rochester Lancers started and ended the season at #17. Six teams ended the season within one slot of where they started. Eleven teams finished within two slots of where they started.

The resurrected Soles were the biggest overachievers, starting the season at #13 and finishing at #8. The expansion Mesquite Outlaws were the biggest disappointments, starting at #8 and ending at #14.

The abrupt end to the season leaves a bunch of unanswered questions and an incomplete feeling. Even before most people had heard of a coronavirus, the MASL was dealing with serious immigration issues that adversely affected some teams and benefited Monterrey and Sonora. Sidelined for all or part of the season were major stars like Robert Renaud, Ricardo Diegues, and Thiago Freitas. The San Diego Sockers lost Emanuel Aguirre, Diego Arriaga, and Luis Piffer when their visas were revoked, and the Turlock Express never had the services of eight players for visas reasons. Not to mention Gordy Gurson and Brandon Escoto were dismissed by their playoff-bound teams and Josh Lemos missed the entire season with a torn ACL.

Provided things are back to normal by November, teams have a longer offseason to hit the reset button and try to make a run at the Ron Newman Cup in 2020-21.
